This magnificent gigantic water color hand painted by the famous artist Khaleel on genuine papyrus paper beautifully captures the complete scenario of Osiris, Lord of the Underworld, sitting in judgement over the dead in the Hall of Two Truths.
It was believed that upon death, one's fate in the afterlife was determined by the weighing of one’s heart which was kept within the mummified body for the deceased to use it in the afterlife.
From left to right – the human soul (Hunifer) enters the underworld (Duat) and is led for a Weighing of the Heart by Anubis, the God of the dead, who has the head of a jackal. Anubis weighs the persons heart on a scale against the feather of Ma’at, the goddess of Cosmic Order, truth, and righteousness. If the heart should weigh more than the feather, meaning that the person was more wicked than good, then the heart would be devoured by Ammit, a demon with the head of a crocodile and part leopard, part hippopotamus, and with goat arms. The moon god Thoth, the ibis-headed scribe and the consort of Maat records the result. If Hunifer passes the test, he is presented to Osiris and can take his place in heaven with the gods, else he is fed to Ammit.
